Contretype is a center of photographic art based in Brussels. Founded in 1978 by Jean-Louis Godefroid, this center is situated in a famous Art Nouveau mansion "the Hôtel Hannon", since 1988. Edouard Hannon (1853-1931) who was the owner of this mansion was an engineer and a brilliant photographer.

The purpose of Contretype is the promotion of the contemporary photographic art, by the organisation of exhibitions in Brussels but abroad too, by the publication of a bimestrial bulletin of informations sent to our members in Belgium and abroad. The edition of portfolios, mostly accompagned by the retrospective of belgian artists give the opportunity to the museums and to the public to have an album of some master's work.

Contretype has realised group exhibitions with other institutions. For example Images inventées - art photography in Belgium during the 50's" in collaboration with the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.

In 1991, an important photographic project has been done in Brussels 04 /50- la Mission Photographique à Bruxelles with the support of the Ministère de la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale - an exhibition and a book realised by Gilbert Fastenaekens - Christian Meynen - Marc Deneyer - Jacques Vilet and Daniel Desmedt. Shown in Brussels, this exhibition has travelled to Quebec - Galerie Vu, to Coimbra - Portugal during the Encontros de Fotografia, and will be exhibited this autumn in the Museum of Dundee (United Kingdom) during the scottish festival Fotofeis.
